Lowry confirms new orthopaedic services for Nenagh

Independent TD Michael Lowry has confirmed that Nenagh General Hospital is to benefit from the appointment of a new specialist orthopaedic surgeon post for the Mid West.

The post comes into effect from this week and, a surgeon has already been recruited for the post by the HSE.

As part of the terms of the new position, at least one third of the new surgeon’s time will be spent at Nenagh hospital.

He will be providing a range of services for the hospital including an out patient clinic and day surgery in Nenagh.

The surgeon in question is also one of Irelands leading specialists in Spinal surgery and procedures. It is hoped that this skills will be utilized in the hospital.

Deputy Lowry welcomed the appointment and said he hoped that significant improvements could now be made on orthopaedic services for the people of North Tipperary and the Mid West in general.

Lowry also said that he will be pushing the Minister for Health to get the agreed capital funding released to initiate phase one of the capital redevelopment project of the hospital approved in the short term. These are the lifts to bring patients between the wards the surgical units.

Lowry said that he felt that the addition of surgical day hours in the area of orthopaedics was an example of Nenagh hospital realizing its exciting potential as providing an extensive range of day surgery procedures for the people of North Tipperary.
